You asked “Where are you?”^l
and we hid fearing
our newly noticed nakedness,
fearing Your piercing
knowledge of all we had done.
Ever since, this world we inhabit
moves through us like water,
like wind, like the words we whisper
to You and to each other
when we are most in pain,
or fear or anger, or in the midst
of greatest effort, or most deeply
throbbing in the pulse of love.
And even now we struggle
to understand how hiding
from You who ever since
has hidden from us, means
our hidden selves contain
You, You dwell within us.
Until we throw wide the gates,
run out into the open
crying, “We’re here!!”
we will never know
ourselves or You
so completely
do we inhabit
One another.
