Late winter struggles

late winter struggles—despite drip
and thaw—to stay forever

beneath wet slush——dark
soft earth, pink and coral

pearl shine of roots descending,
to drink what sinks

among white crystals—while finches
golden early chase

tardy spring, fluttering
the feeders, quarrelling

mid-air for seed.
