Redigging the Wells of My Ancestors

“Isaac dug anew the wells which had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham’s death;”  Toldot, Gen: 26:19

What have we lost?
What can be reclaimed?
Not wealth grasped
in the hand, nor life
that defies death.

Digging in this rocky soil
redigging the wells
of my ancestors,
I hear their whispered
questions rising.

The sweet waters pool
in the trembling darkness
far below.
