Without Rage

“Refuse slavery, escape into faith.” ~Muriel Rukeyser,  Akiba
“without rage, love is helpless,” ~Alicia Ostriker, Nakedness of the Fathers,
                            Biblical Visions & Revisions
, p.238

The Mystery did not know what we needed
until we knew
and called out to the heavens.

Each week, I explore one small hole in the blood-
stained fabric of justice—the wailing
that pours through it.

Others who love justice work
at its edges—patching, sewing,
trying to teach

kindness to the forgetful ones.  We’re all
trying to learn how to welcome
the fires of our own pain,

so we do not, in our rage,
magnify them by burning
everything we touch.
